Theological
development of Co-Redemptrix title
Across the centuries, the Church progressively
clarified Marian doctrine. Numerous canonized saints have used the title
"Co-Redemptrix" or equivalent phrasing in their sermons or writings.
They emphasized Mary's fiat (consent) at the Annunciation and her
presence at the Cross, as co-operative acts in redemption.
While early Church Fathers such as Saints Irenaeus and Ephrem described
Mary’s co-operative role, the precise Latin term “Co-Redemptrix” emerged later.
12 At
least six prominent non-pontiff saints have used the term.
Summary of use by saints of Marian Co-Redemptrix title
1601-1680: Saint John Eudes in his work “Le Cœur Admirable” (on
the Hearts of Jesus and Mary) is credited as the first to systematically use the
title "Co-Redemptrix," calling Mary "the Co-Redemptrix of the
world" for her meritorious suffering with Christ. 13
1676 – 1751: Saint Leonard of Port
Maurice in his “Sermons
on the Passion” refers to Mary as "Co-Redemptrix" regarding her role
in offering Christ to the Father. 14
1696 – 1787: Saint Alphonsus Liguori in his work “The Glories of Mary”, describes
Mary as "Co-Redemptrix" who "paid the ransom for our sins"
through her compassion at Calvary. 15
1878 – 1903: Saint Gemma Galgani in her “Autobiography and letters”
reflects that, in her visions, she called Mary her "Co-Redemptrix,"
uniting her sufferings to Mary's for souls' redemption. 16
1894 – 1941: Saint Maximilian Kolbe, in his “Writings on Mariology” (“Knight
of the Immaculate”), frequently used the title of "Co-Redemptrix,"
teaching that Mary "redeems with Christ" as Mediatrix of all graces. 17
1887 – 1968: Saint Padre Pio of
Pietrelcina, in his Letters
and spiritual counsels, promoted the title, writing that Mary is "our
Co-Redemptrix." 18
