Four
Mediatrix of all Graces
Another important Marian title is
Mediatrix. There is only one mediator between God and humankind in the absolute
sense: Jesus Christ. Saint Paul teaches: "There is one God, and there is
one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus." 7 Mother Mary's mediation must therefore always
be understood in service of the unique mediation of Christ. Nevertheless, the
Church has recognised Mary's extraordinary intercessory role.
At Cana, Mary brought the human need
of the wedding couple to Jesus: "They have no more wine." 8 Mary then told the servants: “Do whatever He
tells you.”9 In response to the humble supplication of Mother
Mary, God permitted the hours of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection to be
brought forward. This manifested the profound mystery of Divine accedence. God,
in His Providence, chose to accommodate the compassionate intercession of the
new Eve on behalf of a human couple. This was, in truth, an extraordinary
concession.
The miracle carried out by Christ
Jesus at Cana provides a beautiful image of Marian intercession. Mother Mary
brings human need to Christ and directs people towards Christ. This is at the
heart of the title Mother of all
Graces.
The title expresses traditional Church
understanding that Mary, by God's Providential design, has a maternal role in
the distribution and intercession of grace. This does not mean that Mary is the source of Divine grace. God alone is the Source of
grace. Christ alone merited
salvation. Mother Mary receives from Christ and, as Mother, intercedes for His
children. Mary’s spiritual motherhood is therefore always Christ-centred.
