Six
Mother Mary and the
Church
Mary's relationship with the Church
did not end at Calvary. Mother Mary had received the Holy Spirit at the
Annunciation. At Pentecost, Mary was present with the nascent
Church, as they awaited outpouring of that same Spirit. This image became
profoundly important in Christian spirituality. Mary is Mother of Christ and,
in a spiritual sense, Mother of those who belong to Christ. The Church sees Mother
Mary as a model of discipleship. Saint John Paul II indicated Mother Mary as
model of faith, hope and charity for the Church. 10
Mother Mary teaches the Church to listen
attentively to the Voice of God, and to respond in prayer. Through the witness
of her own fiat, she teaches the faithful to surrender themselves to
God’s Holy Will. Beneath the Cross, Mary
teaches steadfast fidelity amid suffering. In the silence of waiting during the
three days after her Son’s crucifixion, Mary exemplifies unwavering hope in
God’s redemptive Promise. Mary’s motherhood therefore continues
to be understood as maternal presence accompanying Christians on their
pilgrimage towards holiness.
