Two
Meaning of
Co-Redemptrix
The title Co-Redemptrix requires
careful theological explanation. The word does not mean that Mary is a second
redeemer, or that she possesses power equal to that of Christ. The prefix
"co-" comes from the Latin word cum, in this instance meaning
"with". In its theological usage, the title refers to Mary's co-operation
with Christ in the work of redemption.
Christ's sacrifice on the Cross is
unique and complete. Humankind is redeemed solely through the grace of Jesus
Christ. Mary's participation is subordinate to Christ, and dependent upon Him.
God chose not to treat Mary as a
passive instrument. The Almighty invited her free co-operation in His plan of
redemption for humankind. Mother Mary’s co-operation began with the
Annunciation, and continued throughout Christ’s Life. Her suffering was
especially profound at Calvary.
The Second Vatican Council described Mary as co-operating with Christ in a unique manner. She "co-operated by her obedience" in the work of human salvation. 5
The title Co-Redemptrix expresses the profound union between Mary’s obedience and Christ’s redemptive mission, without obscuration of Christ’s sole role as Redeemer.
Mary does not stand beside Christ as an equal.
She remains entirely dependent upon Christ.
