Marian ministry
against evil: Lourdes France
The efficacy of Mother Mary’s
ministry against the forces of evil has been understood within church tradition
as flowing from her unique relationship with Christ, and her participation in
His redemptive work. One significant manifestation associated with this
ministry is found in the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes, France. The
apparitions were formally investigated by ecclesiastical authorities and
declared worthy of belief in 1862.
The theme of enmity between the Woman
and the serpent has its biblical foundation in Genesis 3:15, This theme has been understood
within Mariology as referencing Christ and His Mother. As Mother of the
Redeemer, Mary stands in profound opposition to sin and to all that seeks to
separate humankind from God.
An incident as follows, is associated
with the fourth apparition of Our Lady at Lourdes. According to the account of
Saint Bernadette Soubirous, the saint heard a disturbing cacophony of voices
arising from the direction of the River Gave.
The voices ceased when the Blessed Virgin appeared and looked in the direction of the voices, which were then seized with fear and began to disperse, finally fading away altogether. 50
This account traditionally has been
interpreted in Mariology as illustration of the contrast between the serenity
of the Mother of God, and disturbance associated with evil. The sudden silence
in the presence of Mary became, for the faithful, an image of her maternal
protection and spiritual authority associated with her intercession.
The significance of this event should
be understood within the proper order of Christology. Mary does not possess
power that rivals or replaces the Power of God. Whatever efficacy is attributed
to her intercession comes from God, and is entirely dependent upon Him. As
Source of grace and Victor over evil, God graciously chooses to work through
Mother Mary’s ministry.
The Lourdes event is significant
because the apparitions themselves placed strong emphasis upon prayer and
conversion. Our Lady called Saint Bernadette to pray for sinners, and directed
attention towards the need for spiritual renewal. Marian character of the Lourdes
message lies in the call to turn away from sin, and to turn towards God. In
this sense, Mary's opposition to evil is expressed not through confrontation
for its own sake, but through drawing souls toward Christ. Mother Mary draws
humankind towards the Redeemer, for purpose of redemption.
The title of the Immaculate
Conception, revealed during the Lourdes apparitions, also has Mariological
significance. Mary, preserved by God's grace from original sin from the first
moment of her conception, is presented within theology as a unique sign of the
victory of Divine grace. Mary’s holiness does not originate in herself; it is
the fruit of God's prevenient
grace. Thus, the Immaculate Virgin becomes a powerful sign of what grace
can accomplish when a human life is wholly receptive to God's Will.
The Marian message of Lourdes continues
to remain relevant wherever humankind encounters division and spiritual
confusion. The faithful should not surrender to fear when faced with evil; all
should turn with confidence to Christ. The
faithful are called to persevere in prayer and, within Mariological tradition,
to seek the maternal protection of Mother Mary.
Lourdes provides a significant image
of Marian ministry in the spiritual struggle against evil. Mother Mary does not
compete with Christ's authority; instead, she serves. Her maternal
intercession, understood within church tradition, reminds us that
triumph over evil ultimately belongs to Christ. Mary, by God's gracious design,
participates in the work of redemption, through her holiness and maternal care
for the human family.
