Nine
The Immaculate
Conception and defeat of evil
Mary's Immaculate Conception is
particularly significant when considering her relationship to spiritual
warfare. The Church teaches that, from the first moment of her conception, Mary
was pre-emptively preserved by God's grace from original sin through the merits
of Christ.
This doctrine does not place Mary
outside the need for Christ. Rather, it shows the power of Christ's redemption.
Mary herself is redeemed by Christ in unique and pre-emptive manner. She is
therefore a sign of what God's grace can accomplish.
The Church sees in Mother Mary a
woman who belongs entirely to God. Her holiness springs not from herself, but
from God’s grace faithfully received and lived. For this reason, the honour of
Mary leads us towards Christ. Authentic
Marian devotion always leads to Jesus. Historically, this premise led to the
popular saying within the Christian Church, “Ad Iesum per Mariam” (To
Jesus through Mary).
