Five
Mother Mary at the
Cross
The deepest theological foundation
for Mother Mary's participation in redemption is found at Calvary. Mary stood
beneath the Cross; she did not flee from the suffering of her Son. Mother Mary
did not understand everything that was happening, yet she remained faithful.
Mary’s suffering is not a second
sacrifice alongside Christ’s sacrifice. Rather, her maternal heart is united with the offering of
Christ. The Church has traditionally contemplated this mystery as Mary’s participation in the
sufferings of the Redeemer.
The Cross therefore reveals something
essential about Mary She always subordinated her will to the Will of God. At Bethlehem Mother
Mary gave Christ to the world, at the behest of Almighty God. At Calvary, Mary remained beside Jesus as He
gave Himself for the world.
Through the Resurrection, Christ
triumphed over sin and death. Mother Mary's role remains entirely dependent upon this victory. Mary
is not the source of
redemption. She is Mother who co-operates with the Redeemer.
