Seven
Mother Mary and
spiritual warfare
Christian tradition long associated Mother
Mary with the struggle against evil. Biblical foundation of this association is
particularly associated with Genesis 3 and Revelation 12. In Genesis, the woman
stands in opposition to the serpent. In Revelation, a woman appears clothed
with the sun, opposed by the dragon. Both serpent and dragon symbolise the
fallen angel satan, who opposes the Will of God.
The Church traditionally has read
these passages in connection with Mary. Mother Mary's importance in spiritual
warfare does not arise from personal power; it arises from her unique
relationship with Christ.
Mary - who said yes
to God - became Mother of the Son of God, Jesus is the Vanquisher of satan. Christian devotion has
frequently turned to the Mother of the Vanquisher, when they are confronted
with temptation and spiritual danger.
The rosary, Salve Regina, Memorare,
Litany of Loreto, and other Marian prayers have become part of the Church's
spiritual treasury. The faithful seek Mary's intercession as they follow
centuries’ old ecclesiastical teaching and belief that this mother's prayer for
the children of God, has profound spiritual significance within redemptive
framework. Moreover, invocation of the name of Mother Mary is a true resource within spiritual warfare.
