SECRETS
In
the days before Christ’s birth
when
Our Lady walked this earth,
did
the folk just let her pass
while
the softly growing grass
burst
in flower-stars, white and blue?
Did
the neighbours let her go,
wondering
why the trees bent low,
spilling
petals where she’d tread
till
her way was carpeted
soft
and cool, in white and blue?
When
the brisk wind bent the wheat,
robbed
the grape of fragrance sweet,
did
her kinsfolk wonder why
Mary
would in rapture sigh,
stitching
garments, small and blue?
Cradled
in her virgin breast
lay
Divinity at rest.
Wonder-eyed
the neighbours saw
That
her eyes were wells of awe –
but
in heaven Gabriel knew.
