Mediaeval Poetry in Praise of the Blessed Virgin (Part One)

Sainte Marye Virgine, Moder Jesu Christes Nazarene

The mediaeval period
The mediaeval period is generally considered as the time when the devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary reached its climax in England.

Our Lady of Walsingham
During the Anglo-Saxon period before the Norman Conquest (1066) a noblewoman, the Lady Richeldis de Faverches, who lived in the manor of Walsingham, told people she had experienced a vision of the Blessed Virgin, in obedience to which she built a chapel. (1)
Gaef (1965:3) states that as the Middle Ages advanced, Walsingham became "the most important Marian centre of pilgrimage since the eleventh century".

But it was not the only Marian pilgrimage centre in England, asserts Litten (1994:1-2); there were many others besides - inter alia at Ipswich, Canterbury, Westminster, York, London, Doncaster, Glastonbury, Willesden, Islington, Caversham, Barking, Winchester, Thetford, Evesham, Egmanton and Pen Rhys "to name but a few".

Our Lady's Dowry
According to Litten, nowhere in Europe was Mary of Nazareth held in greater honour during the Middle Ages than in England:

indeed, England itself was regarded as 'Our Lady's Dowry',
such being the devotion held by the populace towards the
         Mother of God.
                                                              (1994:1).

Tweflth Century and St Bernard of Clairvaux
In the first quarter of the twelfth century, a movement to give more honour to God sprang up in England.
Its adherents praised God and lauded the Virgin Mary for providing the world with a Redeemer in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Christians had traditionally placed faith in Mary's love and mercy.
Now the belief in her powers of intercession with God took root.

Indeed, St Bernard of Clairvaux - who established the Cult of the Virgin Mary - expressed the principle of intercession: 'She will listen to thee, the Son will listen to her, the Father to him.  And the natural appeal of this gentle yet powerful woman was such that her 'cult' spread throughout the Christian world. People referred to her as 'Our Lady', a name first recorded about 1175. The Ave Maria became common i the late twelfth century and some bishops - Grosseteste of Lincoln being one - insisted on all the faithful in their diocese being able to recite it.

                                                                                             (Litten 1994:1)

Since literature was similarly affected by this upsurge in the veneration of the Virgin Mary, mediaeval times in England saw an unprecedented increase in Marian poetry.

Rosemary Woolf
Rosemary Woolf (1968:115) divides the corpus of mediaeval Marian verse into three separate types;
those praising Mary and begging her mercy (e.g. A Cry to Mary: Sainte Marye Virgine), (2)
the five-joy poems (e.g. A Song of the Five Joys: Haile be þu mari) (3) and the Virgin-Christ Child dialogues, which are mostly variations on translations based on the Latin hymn "Stabat Mater Dolorosa luxta crucem" [the sorrowful mother stood at the cross], (e.g. The Blessed Virgin to her Son on the Cross: A Sone! tak hede to me whas sone þu was) (4)

Novena to St Rita of Cascia - Advocate of the Impossible (Part Three)

EIGHTH DAY
St Rita, you suffered an illness which for four years kept you bedbound till death.
You left an example for us in this way of perfect resignation to the Will of God and to unconquerable patience in suffering.
your only regret was in being a burden to your companions.

What calm and peace shone in your face as you approached your deliverance from the painful prison of your body to your heavenly home.

How shall it be with us, sinners at the hour of death?
Oh St Rita, regard our misery.
Ask Jesus to grant us perfect resignation and patience in our last illness, and a happy death in His embrace, so that, in your company, we may bless our Jesus forever.

Recite the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be three times;
OUR FATHER, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy kngdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against usl.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

HAIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

GLORY BE to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

SUPPLICATION TO ST RITA

Holy patroness of those in need, St Rita, whose pleadings before your divine Lord are almost irresistible, who for your generosity in granting favours have been called the Advocate of the Hopeless and even of the impossible.
St Rita, you were so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for your crucified Jesus that you could obtain from Him whatever you asked for.
On this account we confidently turn to you for assistance, expecting, if not always relief, at least comfort.
Be favourably inclined to our request, showing your power with God on behalf of the suppliant.
Be generous to us as you have been in so many wonderful cases, for the greater glory of God, for the spreading of the devotion to you, and for the consolation of those who trust in you.

We promise, if our petition is granted, to glorify you by making known your favour , to bless and sing your praise forever.

Relying then, on your merit and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we pray you
(here mention your request).

NINTH DAY
Your deep humility, St Rita, and the distinguishing virtues which from childhood to death you sought to conceal from the world, keeping yourself hidden in God, were the cause of your elevation to the illustrious distinction you now enjoy in heaven.
But our loving Jesus, Whose humility you perfectly emulated, wished to glorify you on earth also.
No sooner had your beautiful soul left for Paradise than many miracles were wrought through your intercession, while at the same time, from far and near, people proclaimed you a saint.
And now devotion to you is spread thoughout the world, and above all the saints you enjoy the privilege of being called the 'Saint of the Impossible' and 'Advocate of most hopeless cases.'
Illustrious St Rita, obtain for us from God the inestimable favour of knowing we have nothing to boast about, and that without Him we are nothing and can do nothing.
Preserve us by your powerful intercession from the eternal ruin into which the proud and rebellious angels fell, so that we may one day be permitted to share the glory which you, humblest of saints, are already enjoying a glory granted only to the humble.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be, three times.
Supplication as at the Eighth day.

To each of the following answer: *Obtain for us our request

By the singular merits of your childhood *
By your perfect union with God's Will *
By your courageous suffering during your married life *
By the consolation you felt when your husband converted *
By the suffering in your heart when your husband was murdered *
By the sacrifice your your children rather than see them offend God *
By your entrance into the convent *
By your prayers  and works of contemplation *
By the pain you suffered *
By the love of God which consumed you *
By the love of the Eucharist *
By the joy you felt to leave your trials to meet God *
By the example you gave to people of every state of life *

Pray for us, St Rita, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray

Oh God, Who in thy infinite tenderness hast deigned to regard the prayer of thy servant, Blessed Rita, and grant to her supplication that which is impossible to human foresight, skill and efforts, in reward of her compassionate love and firm reliance on your promises.
Have pity on our adversity and help us in our calamities that the unbeliever may known You are the reward of the humble, the defence of the helpless and the strength of those who trust in You.
Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, Amen.

PRAYER TO ST RITA TO ASK THE GRACE OF A CURE
Blessed Rit, faithful servant of our divine Lord, refuge of those weighed down through sorrow, I humbly ask your prayers on my behalf.
You whose life from the cradle to the grave was one of continual virtue, interced for me that, through your merits, I may be heard.
you who received many marks of kindness from our crucified Redeemer who allowed you to share His sufferings, you who were so patient and charitable in assisting those on their beds of pain, by your many merits I humbly ask you to look with favour on me in my present need, that, through your powerful intercession, I may regain health of soul and body, if such is God's Will.

Pray at least that I may find comfort in this illness I have been sent, and that I may be resigned until God sees fit to come to my aid.
With full confidence in your advocacy I place myself in your hands, knowing that you will obtain for me what will be for my benefit.

St Rita, Advocate of those in distress, pray for me.

Novena to St Rita of Cascia - Advocate of the Impossible (Part Two)

FOURTH DAY
How great, O St Rita, was your love for God and your neighbour!
Who can picture the countless sighs and burning tears of pity that came from you during the days and nights you spent meditating on the passion of our crucified Lord?
Who can understand the happiness you felt during your frequent times of rapturous prayer with God?

Your love for your neighbour was known to the poor and sick, to the sisters in the convent and to afflicted and erring men and women of every state of life.
With your boundless charity you embraced them all in the mercy of Jesus Christ.
How unfortunate are we with our hearts of stone for the spiritual and bodily needs of our neighbour.
Yet we allow ourselves to be led astray by our culpable passions.
Ask our beloved Jesus, St Rita, to soften our hearts and guide our affections by the purest love of God and our neighbour, so that, beginning at once to imitate your exemplary ways, we may be united after death to that Uncreated Love that has rendered you so glorious and happy in paradise.

Recite the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be three times;

(here mention your request).

FIFTH DAY

St Rita, from childhood you knew the dangerous rocks on which our human nature is wrecked: towering ambition, evil interests, wicked pleasures.
Your horror of these dangerous pitfalls kept you safe.
You who had, in obedience to your parents, bravely endured a life that was repugnant to you, began to feel unsafe in the world after being deprived of your husband and sons.
Therefore you begged Jesus to place you in a convent.
You bound yourself forever to Jesus by solemn vows.

You are happy, holy Rita.
We are unhappy, crushed by the weight of our ambition, under the yoke of our evil passions which lead us to eternal ruin.
Obtain for us from Jesus that from now on we may love heavenly things alone; that, casting aside all worldly wickedness, we may, chaste in heart and mind, receive the hundredfold reward promised to all who despise the deceptive goods of this world.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be, three times.
Supplication as on the Fourth Day.

SIXTH DAY
We cannot sufficiently admire, St Rita, the spirit of prayer and penance which formed the distinctive mark of your holiness and by which your life became a continuous flower-chain of prayers and holy contemplations.

We, St Rita, do the very opposite! When we are assailed by terrible passions, far from mortifying ourselves and begging God to help us overcome the, we encourage them.
Worse still, we go in search of what will lead to eternal perdition.

We recognise the imperative need of penance and prayer and beg you to obtain for us from Jesus the favour that through prayer and resistance we may never again fall into sin, but may be made worthy to share everlasting joy with you.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be, three times.
Supplication as on the Fourth Day.

SEVENTH DAY
Oh St Rita, burning to take part in the sufferings of Christ's Passion, see Him granting your prayer, after a sermon you heard on the subject, preached by St James della Marca.

So fired up were you that on returning to your room, you shed tender tears of compassion for Jesus. You suffered an ulcer on your forehead for fifteen years, without complaint in remembrance of His severe sufferings.

Oh St Rita, obtain for us from Jesus the grace patiently to bear illness and any temporal ills He may send us, so that, having escaped eternal punishment, we may glorify Him forever in Paradise.
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be, three times.
Supplication as on the Fourth Day.

NOVENA TO SAINT RITA OF CASCIA - PART ONE

Luky
ST RITA OF CASCIA

St Rita of Cascia was born in 1381 at Rocca Porena, two miles from Cascia in the diocese of Spoleto, Italy.

Rita longed to become a religious from an early age.
However, her parents, Antonio and Amata Mancina asked her to reconsider her request. In obedience to their wishes she married.

Rita's husband turned out to be a man of an inflammable temper.

Rita uncomplainingly put up with his verbal and physical abuse.
She gave birth to two sons who turned out to be as hot-tempered as their father.
Her patience was rewarded when her husband became reconciled to God.

Sorrow
Sorrow struck again in her life when her husband was murdered by adversaries.
When their sons expressed their intention to avenge their father, Rita prayed to God either to convert them or to take them to Him before they could commit murder.

Her prayer was granted in a way which must have caused her great grief: the two boys became ill and died.

Augustinian convent
Rita's original desire to become a nun had persisted and the way now seemed open for her to enter the Augustinian convent in Cascia, into whose convent she eventually found her way.
Rita lived a life marked by holiness and wish to honor the suffering of Jesus.

Rita suffered from a forehead ulcer for a lengthy period of time which she attributed to suffering in honor of the crucifixion of Jesus.
  Eventually she died in 1456.

Roses are blessed in Rita's honour because as she lay dying she asked a relative to bring her a rose from her old home.
Though it was January, one of Italy's coldest months, the relative found a full grown rose and brought it back to her.

Scent of roses

After Rita's death a scent as sweet as roses spread through the convent and into the church.
Rita's feast day is celebrated on 22 May.

Rita's greatness lies in her littleness and readiness to offer any difficulties and sufferings in honor of Jesus.
Many who feel shy to speak directly to God prefer to ask others already in heaven to take prayers to God on their behalf.

Advocate of the Impossible
So many prayers offered to God by placing them under the protection of Saint Rita to give to Him have been granted that she is sometimes called the Advocate of the Impossible or the Advocate of Desperate Cases.

Even so, it is not to be supposed that all requests for alleviation of suffering through the intercession of St Rita of Cascia are automatically and immediately granted.

St Rita's own life shows that sometimes even the courage to accept suffering with dignity constitutes a miracle.

Catherine Nicolette
In earlier years I had a healthy scepticism regarding the devotion to St Rita of Cascia, especially about the story of the rose.

As a joke, I 'challenged' Rita to send me a rose. It would never happen, I knew.

At the time I was experiencing difficulty, and really needed spiritual help.

That evening I looked out into the wintry snow, and saw a small red rose blooming on dead looking branches. The rose was quite perfect despite the icy weather.

As I looked at the rose, I found myself saying,
'St Rita, if you really are the Advocate of the Impossible, please ask God to help me to get through this difficult time'.
I felt a little silly, and then forgot about my little prayer.

Letter from Cascia
Some time later a letter arrived in the post. It had travelled from a friend in Italy to my parents' then home in South Africa, and from there on was redirected to London.
It was from a lady I had never met, who had asked a mutual friend for my address.

In the letter, she told me she had recently visited our mutual friend in Rome.
This friend had mentioned she had a friend, and told her my name.

This lady had then gone on to visit Cascia.
While at prayer in the inner convent, she had felt overwhelming inspiration to write to me and to send a gift.

Rosepetal
The present the lady sent was a burgundy coloured rosepetal she had picked from the rosebush in the inner convent where Rita used to stay.
She had pressed the rosepetal and sent it, carefully wrapped in tissue, to me.

Bewildered, I touched the petal. A strong, exquisite rose scent rose from it; and clung to my fingers for many hours.
My difficulty resolved the next day.

I'm just saying.

It is my privilege to present the holy 'Novena to St Rita of Cascia, Advocate of the Impossible' in honor of the gracious lady who lived a life of holiness.

NOVENA IN HONOUR OF ST RITA OF CASCIA

FIRST DAY
See us, St Rita, at your feet, to show our respect for you, to learn from you the way to goodness and to gain from God through your intercession the grace to follow this way until death.
At the age of seven you became remarkable for every virtue; wisdom, modesty, love of retirement, love of God, prayerfulness and a readiness to suffer for Him, while holding worldly pretensions in contempt.

You were fortunate indeed to know so well from your very childhood how to co-operate with God's grace.

You were equally fortunate in wasting no time to lay the foundation of your holiness.
How different from you we have been and still are.
Dazzled by the world's pretensions we find ourselves wearied by heavenly things.
Our faults increase in number each day and we find the idea of penance totally repugnant.

St Rita, you who have such ability to communicate with God, obtain for us sorrow for our sins and the grace to start afresh.

Even if we have not imitated your innocence, obtain for us the grace to emulate your penance, so that we may one day receive the precious reward for the innocent or repentant reserved in heaven.

Recite the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be three times;

Be favourably inclined to our request, showing your opwer with God on behalf of the suppliant.

SECOND DAY

God had chosen you, St Rita, as the model of virgins, wives, widows and nuns.
Therefore he allowed you to fill all these three states of life.
What a marvellous example you gave to wives, especially during the years you were obliged to live with a husband whose nature was so different from your own.
You endured criticism, insults and blows alike but by your sweetness you helped him to overcome his faults and become humble and mild.

May many wives learn from you the great art of suffering in silence, of softening the hearts of their irritable husbands.

may we all learn to live with our relatives and neighbours according to the holy laws of peace and Christian charity.
May the unkindness and discord that rage in so many families, very often reducing them to a sad and miserable condition, come to an end.
We beg of you especially, St Rita, to obtain for us all from God, the Giver of all good gifts, your constant love of sweet peace and concord, in the Kingdom of everlasting peace.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father, etc. three times.

Supplication as in the Prayer of the First Day

THIRD DAY

What grief you must have felt, St Rita, on discovering the awful news of your husband's murder.
What bitter tears you must have shed, particularly at the terrible thought that his soul might have been unprepared to meet his Eternal Judge.
Resigned to the just dispensations of God, unmindful of the miserable state to which you were reduced, you placed yourself and your two sons in the Hands of your Jesus.
How many prayers you must have sent up to Him for the salvation of that soul you had softenend, and for the forgiveness of his murderers.
Then, finding out that your sons were planning revenge on these, you prayed that their hearts might be changed, and, if not, that they might be taken from the world rather than be allowed to execute their design.
Then, when they were taken, you in your greatness of heart thanked Jesus for having lovingly heard your prayer and taken them to Himself in their innocence. How miserable are we when we cannot forgive the slightest offence, nor make any sacrifice for the glory of God and the salvation of our own and our neighbour's soul.

Obtain for us, St Rita, from our beloved Jesus that we may pardon our enemies for love of Him, and ever prefer His love to love of self and all that is dear to us, so that, being worthy of the pardon of our own sins, we may receive an eternal reward in Paradies.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be, etc. three times.

Supplication as in the Prayer of the First Day
