PRAYERS IN HONOUR OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

PRAYERS IN HONOUR OF THE BLESSED
VIRGIN MARY

THE ANGELUS

Recited daily at 06:00; 12:00 and 18:00

The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary,
and she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary

Behold the handmaid of the Lord,
let it be done unto me according to Thy Word.
Hail Mary

And the Word was made flesh.
and dwelt amongst us.

Hail Mary

Pray for us, O most holy Mother of God.
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray;

Pour forth we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy Grace into our hearts;
that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son
was made known by the message of an angel,
                may by His passion and death be brought to the glory                  of His Resurrection, through Christ our Lord.
                                              Amen.

HAIL HOLY QUEEN
(SALVE REGINA)

Hail, Holy Queen,
Mother of Mercy.
Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, O most gracious advocate
thine eyes of mercy towards us;
and after this, our exile, show unto us
the Blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Oh clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

HAIL MARY
(AVE MARIA)

Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with thee,
blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us, sinners, now
and at the hour of our death.
Amen

HAIL THOU STAR OF OCEAN
(AVE MARIS STELLA)

Hail thou star of ocean,
portal of the sky.
Ever Virgin Mother,
of the Lord most high.
Oh by Gabriel’s Ave,
uttered long ago:
Eva’s name reversing.
established peace below.

Break the sinners’ fetters,
light on darkness pour;
all our ills expelling,
every bliss implore.
Show thyself a mother,
offer Him our sighs;
Who for us Incarnate,
did not thee deny.

Virgin of all Virgins,
to thy shelter take us;
gentlest of the gentle.
chaste and gentle make us.
Still as on we journey,
help our weak endeavour;
till with thee and Jesus,
we may live forever.

Through the highest heaven.
to the Almighty Three,
Father, Son and Spirit,
one same glory be.
Amen.

REMEMBER
(MEMORARE)

"Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known;
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, or sought thine intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee;
Oh Virgin of virgins, my mother,
to thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
Oh Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen."

THE ROSARY

On the cross, the Creed is prayed:
"I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ. His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.  From thence He shall come, to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the Body and the life everlasting.  Amen."

On the single beads the Our Father is prayed:

On the sets of beads, the Hail Mary is prayed.

At the end of each set of beads, the Glory Be is prayed:
"Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end Amen."

This is followed by the Fatima prayer:
"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, and save us from the fires of hell, Lead all souls into heaven, especially those who have the most need of thy mercy."

Most people recite five of the fifteen mysteries of the Holy Rosary each day:

The Joyful Mysteries (recited on  Mondays and Thursdays)

1.    The Annunciation
2.    The Visitation
3.    The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem
4.    The Presentation
5.    The finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple.

The Sorrowful Mysteries (recited on Tuesdays and Fridays)

1.     The Agony of our Lord in the Garden
2.     The Scourging at the Pillar
3.     The Crowning with Thorns
4.     The Carrying of the Cross
5.     The Crucifixion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ

The Glorious Mysteries (recited on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays)

1.      The Resurrection from the dead
2.      The Ascension into heaven
3.      The Descent of the Holy Spirit upon Our Lady and the Apostles
4.      The Assumption of Our Lady, body and soul, into Heaven
5.      The Crowning of Our Lady as Queen of Heaven and earth.

At the end of the Rosary all recite the Hail Holy Queen, followed by:

"Pray for us, O most Holy Mother of God:
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ."

LET US PRAY:

"Oh God, Who by the life, death and resurrection of Thy beloved Son Jesus Christ, didst purchase for us the rewards of eternal salvation; grant, we beseech Thee, that, whilst meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen."

MOTHER OF SORROWS, PRAY FOR US

Mother of Sorrows, pray for us

PRAY THE SEVEN SORROWS (DOLOURS) ROSARY OF MOTHER MARY

THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER IS DEDICATED

TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS

The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is celebrated on September 15, after the feast of the Holy Cross. This shows the close connection between the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the sorrows of His holy Mother Mary. The devotion to our Lady of Sorrows has its roots in the gospels.

The Seven Sorrows (or Dolours) are events in the life of Mother Mary, which form a holy devotion for many. The seven sorrows of Our Lady are different to the five sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary. Many devout faithful pray the seven dolours rosary regularly.

THE SEVEN SORROWS ARE BASED ON THE GOSPELS:

1. The prophecy of Simeon. (Luke 2:34-35)

2. The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-23)

3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem (Luke 2:43-45)

4.   Mother Mary meets Jesus on the Via Dolorosa (this is holy tradition, and is not described in the New Testament)

5. The crucifixion of Jesus on Mount Calvary (Matthew 27:34-50, Mark 15:23-37, John 19:18-30)

6. The piercing of the Side of Jesus with a spear, and His descent from the cross (John 19:34)

7. The burial of Jesus by Joseph of Arimathea (Matthew 27:57-61, Mark 15:43-47, Luke 23:50-53,  John 19:40-42)

To pray the Dolour Rosary, also known as the Seven Sorrows Rosary, begin with the Sign of the Cross and the introductory prayer.

Introductory prayer: "My God, I offer You this Rosary in honour of the seven principal Sorrows of Mary, for Your greatest glory, for my conversion and that of all people through Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our salvation and our unique way to come to You, in union with the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen."

For each of the seven sorrows, pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys, reflecting on each sorrow of Mary.

Our Father:

"Our Father, Who art in heaven,

Hallowed by Thy Name;

Thy Kingdom come,

Thy Will be done,

On earth as It is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil,

Amen."

Hail Mary:

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

Blessed art thou among women,

And blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

Pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen."

Conclusion prayer:

"Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,

 our life, our sweetness and our hope.

 To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning, and weeping in this valley of

 tears.

 Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy upon us.

 And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

 O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary."

 (Verse): "Pray for us, O most holy Mother of God. "

 (Response): "That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. "

 Let us pray: "O God, Whose only begotten Son, by His Life, Death and

 Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation, Grant,

 we beseech Thee, that we may both imitate what they contain, and obtain

 what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

 Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

 Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us."

OUR LADY'S CALL FOR PEACE

Our Lady of Tears

O Mother robed in quiet light,
Whose heart once cradled Heaven’s King,
You walk again through shadowed fields
Where broken bells no longer ring.

You see the smoke that veils the sky,
You hear the cries no words can hold;
The child who calls for vanished arms,
The young grown weary, fierce and old.

Your tears fall soft on bloodied earth,
Like dew upon a wounded land;
Each drop a prayer, each sigh a plea
We scarcely pause to understand.

For where a soldier falls in dust,
Or limps through life forever scarred,
You stand beside him in his night,
A mother keeping solemn guard.

Where hunger gnaws at empty homes,
And silence answers orphaned cries,
You gather sorrow to your heart
And lift it gently to the skies.

O Lady, still you call to us -
Not with the thunder war has known,
But in the hush between the guns,
A voice of mercy, soft and lone:

“Let peace be sown where hatred grew,
Let love make whole what fear has torn;
For every child of God is mine -
No life was made for grief or scorn.”

Yet still we turn, yet still we wound,
Yet still the earth drinks bitter rain…
How long, O Mother, must you weep
Before we learn from human pain?

Teach us to lay our weapons down,
To see your Son in every face;
To choose the path of sacrifice,
And build a world of healing grace.

O Lady of the silent tears,
Pray we may hear, and not delay -
That we, your children, rise at last
And answer peace… today.
