THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER
IS DEDICATED
TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS
The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is celebrated on September 15, after the feast of the Holy Cross. This shows the close connection between the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the sorrows of His holy Mother Mary. The devotion to our Lady of Sorrows has its roots in the gospels.
The Seven Sorrows (or Dolours) are events in the life of Mother Mary, which form a holy devotion for many. The seven sorrows of Our Lady are different to the five sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary. Many devout faithful pray the seven dolours rosary regularly.
THE SEVEN
SORROWS ARE BASED ON THE GOSPELS:
1. The prophecy of Simeon. (Luke 2:34-35)
2. The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-23)
3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem (Luke 2:43-45)
4. Mother Mary meets Jesus on the Via Dolorosa (this is holy tradition, and is not described in the New Testament)
5. The crucifixion of Jesus on Mount Calvary (Matthew 27:34-50, Mark 15:23-37, John 19:18-30)
6. The piercing of the Side of Jesus with a spear, and His descent from the cross (John 19:34)
7. The burial of Jesus by Joseph of Arimathea (Matthew 27:57-61, Mark 15:43-47, Luke 23:50-53, John 19:40-42)
To pray the Dolour Rosary, also known as the Seven Sorrows Rosary, begin with the Sign of the Cross and the introductory prayer.
Introductory prayer: "My God, I offer You this Rosary in honour of the seven principal Sorrows of Mary, for Your greatest glory, for my conversion and that of all people through Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our salvation and our unique way to come to You, in union with the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen."
For each of the seven sorrows, pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys, reflecting on each sorrow of Mary.
Our Father:
"Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed by Thy Name;
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done,
On earth as It is in heaven.
Give us this day, our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil,
Amen."
Hail Mary:
"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
Blessed art thou among women,
And blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen."
Conclusion prayer:
"Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning, and weeping in this valley of
tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy upon us.
And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary."
(Verse): "Pray for us, O most holy Mother of God. "
(Response): "That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. "
Let us pray: "O God, Whose only begotten Son, by His Life, Death and
Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation, Grant,
we beseech Thee, that we may both imitate what they contain, and obtain
what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us."
