SERENADE

SERENADE

Your name more fragrant, Mary,
than sage in summer showers,
bounds my far horizons,
rims my fickle skies
as mountains gay with springtime,
garlanded with blossoms,
as mountains gashed with crimson
when lingering summer dies.

My songs are sea gulls, Mary,
wheeling around your beauty,
your beauty cool and gold-flecked
as glades where aspens grow...
tranquil as the dreaming
clouds on mistry summits,
fair as aged cedars
hushed and heaped with snow.

RETURN FROM CALVARY

RETURN FROM CALVARY
Your steps were slow and you leaned heavily
on John and Magdalene. The knife plunged deep
into your heart denied you tears to weep,
nor could you realise that Calvary
with all its pain was awful certainty
and not a dream. Had He not lain asleep
within your arms; was He not ours to keep
for time and all God's long eternity?

You could not think of Him as being dead,
the fires of His life so quickly burned
to ash and vision fled from out His eyes,
but suddenly you saw His blood still red
upon the road and looking back discerned
three crosses black against the sombre skies.

O MATER DULCIS

O MATER DULCIS

In Nazareth, I'd peep some day,
to learn your rare unwonted way
to watch you, with your boy at play,
Dulce ridentem.

At even I'd love to linger too,
hearing old mysteries made new,
to learn true pondering from you
Dulce loquentem.

And dare I ask that it might be
my grace to feel awake in me
that love, which held thee by the tree,
Dulce dolentem?

WINTER SONG

WINTER SONG

Out of stillness deep as sunken stone
light comprehends the night's intended drift:
clear stars that find their certitude alone
strike glory from the planets until the after-image
widens to the stirred pool's rim.
Oh lightly rides the heavens' weight
(as Spirit broods and starbirds skim),
where waters sing under their burden of delight
the Virgin Mother's flowering.

REMEMBER (MEMORARE)

REMEMBER (MEMORARE)

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary
That never was it known
That anyone who came to thy protection,
Implored thy help, or sought thy intercession
Was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my mother,
To thee I come,
Before thee I stand,
Sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
Despise not my petitions
But in thy mercy hear and grant my prayer.
Amen.

HAIL THOU STAR OF OCEAN (AVE MARIS STELLA)

HAIL THOU STAR OF OCEAN
(AVE MARIS STELLA)

Hail thou star of ocean
Portal of the sky
Ever Virgin Mother
Of the Lord most high
Oh by Gabriel's Ave
Uttered long ago
Eva's name reversing
Established peace below

Break the sinner's fetters
Light on darkness pour
All our ills expelling
Every bliss implore
Show thyself a mother
Offer Him our sighs
Who for us Incarnate
Did not thee deny

Virgin of all Virgins
To thy shelter take us
Gentlest of the gentle
Chaste and gentle make us
Still as on we journey
Help our weak endeavour
Till with thee and Jesus
We may live forever

Through the highest heaven
To the almighty Three
Father, Son and Spirit,
One same glory be.

Amen
