OUR LADY OF SOLACE

OUR LADY OF SOLACE

“Let me but hear thy voice
sweet as thy face is fair.”
                        (Gradual)

Your radiance is a secret
which I can only guess,
having never known your smile
but only your caress
sweet beyond all telling,
O Queen of tenderness.

In the star-deep darkness
when I grope for you
swift your arms enfold me
lest, perchance, the true
vision of your beauty
blind my eyes anew.

"O CLEMENS, O PIA, O DULCIS...”

"O CLEMENS, O PIA, O DULCIS...”[1]

Sweeter than honey and the honey-comb
the Fruit you gave us for our daily bread;
and when, like little ones, we cry for sweets,
we need but reach to you and we are fed.

Then honey-sweet, O Mother, cling to us
as golden beauty to the Son-bright air,
that we may leave your love on all we touch -
the traces of your sweetness everywhere!

FESTIVAL (2)

FESTIVAL (2)

I am a  wistful troubadour
beneath high heaven’s wall,
watching for my Lady
till from her casement tall,
like a shaft of sunlight,
she lets her fair glance fall.

I am an eager troubadour
beside high heaven’s gate,
listening for her footfall,
happy just to wait
my Lady’s radiant presence,
come she soon or late.

I am a joyous troubadour
before the Ivory Tower,
lost in my Lady’s beauty,
dreaming my Lady’s power,
until the lilied silence
breaks at her feet – a flower.
